A rustic patio with all the tradition of Jávea

Throughout history, the construction materials used have generally been the most accessible. That is to say, those that were more at hand and were less expensive to transport. This is how the aesthetics of towns is usually related to the landscape in which they are located.

Jávea is one of the best examples. Two materials serve as examples to explain this relationship between construction and environment. We mean la tosca and the boulders. And the place that has always represented this fusion has been the Plaza de la Iglesia-Fortaleza de San Bartolomé.

There, until the reform carried out a few years ago, you could see, on the one hand, the monument built entirely with rough stone and, on the other hand, the pavement made with rounded pebbles.

In the post we dedicated to the recovery of a traditional tosca wall we explain the origin of this material and its importance in the architecture of Jávea. On the other hand, the boulders that have been used in our town came mainly from two places: the Gorgos river bed and the coves made of this type of stone, especially the First Montañar, between Playa del Arenal and the seaside neighborhood of Aduanas del Mar.

In the reform and new construction of a house in the Historic Center -one of our latest projects- this conjunction has occurred in the rustic patios that we have built. The original walls have been recovered with meticulous work that has brought to light some spectacular rough blocks that are at least 100 years old.

And with regard to the rounded edges, we have opted for the placement of some 30.5 x 30.5 prefabricated meshes served by Eurogres tiles because the extraction of this type of stone is currently prohibited. The best alternative is this material, which perfectly reproduces old pavements of this type. Once placed it is necessary to grout it.

The result is a sample, on a small scale, of the type of construction that has been habitual for so many centuries and that, at times, seemed to have disappeared in new architectural projects. Lucky to be able to revive it.
